Geogussr: This is a great website for helping your child build their geographic knowledge—and it’s a lot of fun! This website will drop you down in a random part of the world. It works using Google earth. You can move around and explore the area. The goal is to guess your location. Encourage your children to use any clues they can find. What does the landscape look like? Does it appear to be tropical, temperate, or colder? Can they use the vegetation to guess the approximate latitude? Are there any signs that give clues about the language?
Google Earth: It can be a lot of fun to explore the planet on Google Earth. Try to find your house, your school, or other familiar places? Then explore some places a little further from home. Want to visit Paris, Rome, or Beijing? You can take a 3-D tour here. NOTE: Unless you download the Google App, you’ll need to visit the website in Google Chrome.
True Size Of: This website allows children to take different countries and drag them to different latitudes in order to see how their size and shape are distorted by the Mercator projection. This is a great resource for helping students think about the types of choices that mapmakers have to make as they try to transfer spatial information from a spherical globe to a flat map.
Geography Maps, Games & Resources: This is a gateway site that has links out to many different geography games and other resources.
Printable Outline Maps: This site allows you to print blank outline maps of countries and continents. Obviously children can color and label maps. Another great idea is to use these maps to play a game. Have your child pick a small toy such as a matchbox car or figurine. Practice cardinal directions (i.e., north, east, south, west).
National Geographic Geo-Stories: Interactive slideshows that combine dynamic maps, pictures, video, and captions to take viewers on tours of places and topics
